Destress for the EMS-Lesson One

Happy Thanksgiving!

Most first responders have to work on Thanksgiving because there are no holidays for the emergency personnel. I appreciate that and I just would like to wish all of you a Happy Thanksgiving.

Holidays are a very busy time of year for the regular person and for the emergency worker. The added stress for the emergency worker is the weather conditions which creates traffic collisions, medical issues with the cold and flu season, and difficulties getting on scene.

Because this is such a busy time of year for the EMS it is important to be aware of the fact that it takes energy to handle extra stress. One of the things we can do is notice and maintain our energy through our healthy habits of eating right, exercising, and getting plenty of rest.

Sounds simple but, when you are busy, maintaining your health and energy is hard work.

One of the most important things we can do is take care of ourselves because if we don't take care of ourselves we won't be able to take care of anyone else. And that is our job, taking care of others.

One way we can take care of ourselves is evaluate our habits and change them one at a time. For example, if we eat unhealthy processed food, we know that will drain our energy rather than increase it. Another example is smoking. This is a tough one because after we smoke it feels like it relieves our stress when actually it increases it.

My goal in this lesson is to suggest that we notice and evaluate our habits and change them for the better one at a time and we will create energy. As emergency personnel we need energy.

We can do this, we only need the desire.

Have a great holiday and don't forget to have fun and be playful because it is in your nature.
